Ingredients

Seafood

  • 1
5 oz canned tuna in water or olive oil

Produce

  • 1
    1 each ripe avocado
  • 2
    0.25 medium red onion
  • 3
    1 each lime
  • 4
    2 tablespoons cilantro sprigs

Pantry

  • 1
    1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 2
    0.5 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 3
    0.25 teaspoon black sesame seeds
  • 4
    0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Directions

1

Prepare the Tuna

Drain the tuna thoroughly. If using oil-packed tuna, gently press out excess oil. Place the tuna in a medium bowl.

2

Add Aromatics

Finely dice the red onion. Mince or finely chop the cilantro. Add the diced red onion and chopped cilantro to the bowl with the tuna.

3

Flavor the Tuna

Add soy sauce and sesame oil to the tuna mixture. Squeeze the juice of half of the lime over the tuna. Sprinkle in red pepper flakes. Gently mix everything together. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.

Prepare the Avocado

Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, and scoop out the flesh into a small bowl. Mash the avocado with a fork until it is creamy but still has some texture. Squeeze the juice of the remaining half of the lime over the avocado to prevent browning and add flavor. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper if desired.

5

Assemble the Stack

If using a ring mold, place it on your serving plate. Layer half of the mashed avocado in the bottom of the mold, pressing gently to create an even layer. Carefully top the avocado layer with the tuna mixture. If not using a mold, gently layer half of the avocado and then half of the tuna on the plate, trying to keep a nice shape. Repeat with the remaining avocado and tuna on the plate or inside of the mold.

6

Garnish and Serve

Gently remove the ring mold if used. Sprinkle black sesame seeds on top of the tuna avocado stack for garnish. Serve immediately.

Recipe Tips

  • For best flavor, use high-quality tuna packed in olive oil.
  • Adjust the amount of red pepper flakes to your spice preference.
  • For a smoother texture, you can add a touch of mayonnaise or Greek yogurt to the mashed avocado.
  • If you don't have a ring mold, you can use a cookie cutter or just layer the ingredients carefully by hand.
  • To prevent the avocado from browning, make sure to add the lime juice right away.
  • Use fresh cilantro for best flavor. Substitute with parsley if needed.
  • Serve immediately after assembling to enjoy the best texture and appearance.
